The Bank Swallow is a small brown-and-white bird that nests in colonies along sandy banks and shorelines. Once common, their numbers have dropped across Canada, and they’re now listed as Threatened. Our Fisheries & Science Department surveys Bank Swallow colonies each year to find and map nesting sites, track population changes, and protect important habitat. By doing this work, we help ensure these birds have safe places to nest and raise their young. Bank Swallows are important to our ecosystem—they eat large numbers of flying insects and are part of the natural balance that keeps our land and waters healthy. Protecting them today helps keep our environment strong for the future.
