We are the Esgenoôpetitj First Nation Fisheries – Science Department. We are dedicated to protecting, managing, and understanding the waters, lands, and wildlife within our traditional territory. Our work combines traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern science to safeguard our natural resources for current and future generations.
We conduct water quality and sediment sampling to monitor the health of our rivers, bays, and coastal areas. Our team also works closely with terrestrial and aquatic species at risk, studying their habitats, monitoring their populations, and taking action to support their recovery.
Our goals are to:
- Protect the health of our waters and ecosystems.
- Preserve biodiversity and cultural connections to the land and sea.
- Build capacity within our community for environmental stewardship.
- Strengthen our understanding through both science and traditional knowledge.

Looking to the future, we aim to increase community engagement in environmental stewardship, and ensure they remains at the forefront of protecting species and habitats. By doing so, we strive to secure a healthy, sustainable environment for generations to come, rooted in the values and traditions of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation.
